Some More Work

I know it's been a while but I have been working on some projects. I was asked to make one of my flag cases for a friend. This is always a time when I think of all the people who have served this great country and wish there was more I could do to honor their service. So I try to make something they would be proud to show in their home and say, "That is to remember my loved one."

On the lighter side, I have been carving some birds.
I thought I would use some of the drift wood we collected when I went and seen my daughter and her family in Seattle.
Here are two I have finished. I'm getting better each time.

I picked up some plans to do an eagle so I'm working my way up to doing that. Might have a ways to go but I will do it!

Dogwood

I picked up this book and VHS tape from e-bay (Tom Wolfe goes to the Dogs). Watching this guy carve dogs looks so relaxing, he makes it look easy! So, I had to buy some wood and try my hand at making my own hound!
As you can see, I carved two; One I pained and one I left with all the carving marks. I kind of like the plain one.
Now I'm going to have to look at all of my old books and the projects. I always thought they were too hard. After this experience, I think I'll give them a try.

I'm off to my next project. Take care!

I made this from a pattern from Judy Roberts and donated it to Relay for Life to auction off. It was a big hit. I'm thinking of doing one each year because it is a great cause!

Old wood

Picked up a carving magazine the other day and saw this walking stick with a snake on it. Got to thinking about a old branch I pass every day walking my dog and saw a perfect piece for my project. So I started my snake and then thought he might need a reason to be climbing this stick so I put a frog at the top for him to go after. Then I was trying to think about what to put at the top when my lovely girlfriend told me to make it a snake head. So this old piece of wood became something I am proud to show and tell people I carved. Here are some pictures.

Woodlyn Carver

I am starting this because my daughter thinks I should show some of the things I make for people. I will be adding some pictures as I learn more about blogging.
I started out by making things and would throw them away because I would know where the flaws were, or I would just give them away.
I always liked woodworking. I met this man named Bill in my Junior year that made custom things for people. He would make something for you and if he saw you a year later he would ask how the item was. If you told him a door was off a little or something was scratched he was at your house the next day to fix it .
Sadly, after knowing this man for 2 1/2 years, he died of Cancer.
So, I started making blanket chests and flag cases for people.
Now I am getting into carving things. When I make things from a small or large piece of wood I know everyone sees their own piece of beauty in the finished piece.

I made this pheasant and gave it to my vet. He said he put it in his cabin.

This was a chest I made for my daughter's friends.

My mother liked humming birds so I made this for her.
